Aptana Jaxer: server-side Ajax

Aptana released Jaxer: the first ever Ajax server... you got that right, server-side Ajax ... the concept is pretty interesting, a server-side API that wraps for client-side Ajax app to better optimize it and allows you to interface with the file system and database.... Oh, wait a minute, isn't this really similar to AIR? AIR also extends for your JavaScript libraries to allow file system and database access, except that AIR is a client desktop runtime and Jaxer is a server runtime... nevertheless, they solve the same problem... They allow you to leverage existing JavaScript skills to integrate seamlessly with components that will allow you to deploy full apps without the need of any traditional server-side programming language. I always thought Aptana was just a nice Eclipse plugin, but this is pretty innovative. It integrates for your Apache web server as a simple e... (more)

Is Aptana Really a Cloud?

Alan Williamson's Blog The line between what is considered a cloud and what is paramount to hosting is a blurry line at the best of times. What qualifies a companies offering as a cloud based product offering? That is a question that is continually debated in the cloud circles and no one has really yet to offer a real concrete reason. Setting aside all the marketing buzzwords that will get thrown in "scalability" / "on-demand" / "deploy", a cloud offering has to deliver on its hype. For me when words like those are thrown around I want to see: Scalability The ability to start up a new instance programmatically via an API, allowing me to hook into whatever trigger metrics I may have. So if traffic reaches a new level, throw more resources/machines at it without doing anything further except start it up. Also ability to turn off resources to scale-down. On-Demand Wh... (more)

Java Is Better Than JavaScript

Tоday I was participating in a discussion on one Java forum – the question was if Java is an easy or difficult programming language to learn. IMO, Java is not difficult to learn, to teach, and to use. It’s a strongly typed compiled language with tools that help you identify most of the errors before you even run the program. While participating in this discussion I was writing code in a different programming language called JavaScript, which gave me a chance to illustrate a lot of things the Java developer takes for granted, while there are people who work in a more hostile environment called JavaScript. I had a working program, and decided to add a JavaScript handler function to illustrate HTML form submission with jQuery for our upcoming book. I’ve been writing this code in Eclipse-based IDE called Aptana. I’ve added this handler for the submit event to a Donation... (more)

Introducing Aptana: An Alternative to Eclipse

A few months ago I stumbled on an IDE named Aptana and I instantly recognized that it was the perfect IDE for developers who have found it difficult to convert to CFEclipse. And why is it such a great replacement? For starters Aptana is actually based on Eclipse. That means it has all the great features that you've heard of about Eclipse, including the ability to use the CFEclipse plug-in with it. You can install CFEclipse the same way you'd install it for Eclipse, and there's almost no difference in how it works. (Figure 1) But why is this any better than Eclipse? Well, the biggest roadblock for new CFEclipse users is the project-base workflow that it requires. But Aptana supports both the project-based workflow and the traditional file-based workflow that these users are accustomed to. This is huge, because it means that developers can continue to work the way the... (more)
